Social Responsibility

Demka Trade is committed to sustainable business practices and social responsibility in every aspect of its operations. As a manufacturer of wooden pallets, poplar veneer, and plywood, the company integrates circular economy principles into its processes. This means that our business simultaneously cares for the environment, people and the community, and responsible management, creating long-term value for all stakeholders.

We believe that people and the community are at the core of a company’s sustainable success. That is why we continuously invest in local talent, create a safe and stimulating work environment, and support the development of the communities in which we operate. Our employees are our greatest strength, and the well-being of the broader community is just as important to us as business results.

  • Local Employment: As one of the largest employers in our area, we strive to create as many quality jobs as possible for local residents. Most of our employees come from the local community (Kanjiža and nearby towns), which supports the economic empowerment of the region and helps retain young people in the area. We offer fair wages, stable employment, and opportunities for advancement, thereby contributing to a better standard of living for local families. Additionally, through local schools and employment centers, we collaborate on training future staff, helping to develop professional skills within the community.

  • Training and Skills Development: Investing in the knowledge and skills of our employees is a key part of the company’s social responsibility. We organize regular training sessions, workshops, and courses to improve employee expertise across all sectors—from machine operation and quality control to safety management and environmental protection. Every new employee completes an onboarding and safety training program, while experienced staff have opportunities to advance through specialized courses and certifications. We believe in lifelong learning and encourage knowledge sharing within the team so that every team member can grow together with the company. This not only improves productivity and work quality but also increases employee satisfaction and motivation.

  • Occupational Safety and Health: Worker safety is considered our absolute priority and an integral part of our company culture. We have established internal occupational safety policies and measures that exceed legal requirements to ensure every task is performed under controlled and secure conditions. Work zones are equipped with safety fences, sensors, and modern machinery with safety mechanisms, while workers are provided with all necessary personal protective equipment (helmets, safety glasses, gloves, reflective vests, etc.). We regularly conduct occupational health and safety training, emergency simulations, and fire drills to ensure readiness for any scenario. We also continuously monitor and improve working conditions through periodic inspections and internal audits, and every potentially risky situation or injury is thoroughly analyzed to prevent recurrence. Our goal is zero workplace injuries; every employee should return home after their shift as healthy as when they arrived. Through proactive risk management and fostering a culture of safety awareness, we create a work environment where everyone feels protected and valued.

  • Support for the Local Community: Demka Trade strives to be a good corporate citizen and actively contributes to the development of the community in which it operates. We regularly participate in local initiatives and humanitarian actions, whether through sponsorship of cultural and sports events, donations to educational institutions, or reforestation and improvement of public spaces. We work with local authorities and organizations on projects that enhance the quality of life for our fellow citizens, such as improving municipal infrastructure or supporting vulnerable groups. We are also open to dialogue with the community through public forums, presentations at our factory, and by allowing citizens and interested parties to learn about our operations, ask questions, and provide suggestions. We believe that success is meaningful only when we progress together with the community where we live and work, which is why we strive for the development of Demka Trade to go hand in hand with the development of the local community.

Environmental Protection

Demka Trade strives to minimize its environmental footprint by implementing energy-efficient solutions and circular production. We use renewable resources and technologies to reduce emissions and waste, while protecting natural resources for future generations. Special emphasis is placed on efficient transport, full utilization of wood raw materials, and the use of bioenergy in our production processes.

  • Efficient river transport: We use river traffic on the Tisa for raw material supply, which is the most energy-efficient mode of transport. Log transportation by barge uses up to 80% less fuel compared to road transport, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, river transport is safer for the cargo, eliminates the risks of log damage that exist on roads, and reduces the need for additional labor in cargo handling. This green approach to transport reduces our carbon footprint and helps preserve air quality.

  • Zero-waste wood processing: In our production, we apply the “zero waste” principle, ensuring every part of the wood is used to its fullest. Poplar logs are completely processed, and each tree yields several different products. The highest-quality wood is used for veneer and plywood, construction-grade parts are used for wooden pallets, while remaining pieces, shavings, and sawdust are recycled into new value. All wood by-products (cut-offs, chips, leftovers after cutting) are collected and processed into pressed wooden blocks, composite blocks that serve as essential components for pallets. Thanks to this circular process, 100% of the wood material finds its purpose: nothing is discarded, and every part of the wood contributes to the final product. Demka Trade is a pioneer of this approach in Serbia, as one of the few producers of pressed wooden blocks on the domestic market. This complete raw material utilization results in less landfill waste and more efficient production with less need for additional tree harvesting.

  • Renewable Bioenergy and Closed CO₂ Cycle: Environmental responsibility also includes the way we supply energy for our processes. Sawdust and wood waste are not treated as waste, but as a valuable source of bioenergy. All sawdust and wood residues are combusted in our biomass boilers, which produce heat energy for wood dryers and pallet heat-treatment chambers. In this way, we replace fossil fuels with a renewable energy source, effectively closing the CO₂ cycle in production. The carbon dioxide released by burning wood biomass equals the amount absorbed by the tree during its growth, making this process carbon neutral. In addition, we continuously invest in modern equipment (filtration systems and efficient furnaces) to reduce particulate and other pollutant emissions during biomass combustion. The result is cleaner energy for our facilities and a smaller impact on the climate—while also solving the waste problem by turning production residues into useful energy instead of landfill waste.

Management

Responsible corporate management is the foundation of Demka Trade’s sustainable operations. We operate in full compliance with laws and standards, upholding high ethical norms and transparency in everything we do. Our management system includes rigorous quality control, traceability of raw materials from forest to customer, and efficient resource management, building trust with partners, customers, and society as a whole.

  • Compliance with Regulations and Standards: Demka Trade operates in accordance with all relevant domestic laws and European Union regulations, with strict adherence to industry standards. As an EPAL-licensed manufacturer of pallets, we follow stringent European quality standards and technical requirements in Euro pallet production. All our wood products intended for transport also meet ISPM 15 standards, meaning they are properly heat-treated and marked for international trade, thus preventing the spread of harmful organisms and enabling the global use of our pallets and packaging. Furthermore, we source wood exclusively from legal and certified suppliers and hold the FSC® certificate (Forest Stewardship Council), which guarantees that our material originates from sustainably managed forests. By applying these standards and certifications, we ensure that every aspect of our business, from raw material procurement to the final product, is aligned with best practices and responsibility toward society and the environment.

  • Transparency and Traceability: We foster transparent operations and open communication with all stakeholders, providing clear and accessible information about our processes, products, and impacts. Every piece of wood that enters our production cycle has a known origin and can be tracked through every stage of processing. We ensure material traceability through detailed records of procurement, production, and distribution: from forest origin certificates and internal production codes to control protocols and the marking of finished products with serial numbers and quality labels. In this way, our customers can trust that the product they receive comes from responsible sources and is made to the highest standards. Internally, we insist on ethics and integrity; every employee undergoes training in the company’s code of ethics, which includes zero tolerance for corruption, fraud, and conflicts of interest. We regularly report to regulatory institutions and partners on key performance indicators (quality, safety, environmental impact), thereby building a culture of trust and accountability.

  • Internal Quality Control: We ensure the quality of our products and processes through a multilayered internal control system. Each production line features checkpoints where trained controllers or operators verify that semi-finished products meet specified criteria (dimensions, wood moisture content, joint strength, etc.). We have our own laboratory capacities and measuring equipment for quality testing, from verifying pallet load-bearing capacity according to EPAL standards to measuring moisture and strength in veneer and plywood. Our ISO 9001 quality management system (which we are certified for) provides a framework for documenting procedures, monitoring quality indicators, and driving continuous improvement. Additionally, we work with independent certification and inspection bodies (e.g., regular EPAL inspections) to confirm that our production always complies with international standards. Every pallet, panel, or block we deliver bears the stamp of our commitment to quality, and we analyze customer complaints as valuable feedback for further improvement. This systematic approach to quality guarantees the reliability of our products in the market and long-term customer satisfaction.

  • Responsible Resource Management: Efficient management of material, energy, and human resources is key to the sustainability and success of our company. We plan production to optimally use raw materials, minimizing waste (ensured by our circular wood processing model). We also use energy and water efficiently throughout the process: we have modernized equipment to reduce electricity consumption per unit produced, utilize thermal insulation and heat recovery in dryers to save energy. Human resources are managed responsibly as well—through shift planning, care for employee satisfaction, and involving staff in decision-making, we increase team efficiency and loyalty. Financial transparency and responsibility in the use of funds ensure investments are directed into projects that bring the greatest benefit to the company and the community (e.g., ecological projects, new technologies for worker safety, and more). We regularly monitor key resource consumption and cost indicators and optimize processes to minimize all forms of waste. This comprehensive approach to resource management enables Demka Trade to remain competitive and innovative while meeting high standards of sustainable business.

Demka Trade, through this strategy, demonstrates that industrial production can be aligned with care for the planet and society. Through responsible management, ecological initiatives, and commitment to people, we build a sustainable business model that contributes to community development and environmental preservation. Our philosophy is clear: sustainability is not just a part of our business it is its central principle, which is evident in every job we undertake and every product we deliver.
